Vitebsk customs officers stopped two attempts to import marijuana into Belarus during special operations on the Belarusian-Russian border. The presence of prohibited substances was indicated by service dogs.
In the first case, marijuana was planned to be brought into the country by a 32-year-old Belarusian citizen who was operating a Ford Transit van. A substance wrapped in a foil package was found on his passenger seat.
In the second case, a 29-year-old Belarusian driving an Opel Insignia passenger car hid a package of drugs in a bottle of deodorant that was in his personal belongings.
The examinations conducted by specialists of the State Committee for Forensic Examinations in the Vitebsk region confirmed the affiliation of the detected substances to marijuana.
Vitebsk Customs has initiated criminal proceedings against citizens under Part 1 of Article 328-1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to seven years.
