The Grodno Regional Customs has opened a criminal case against a train passenger for the illegal movement of large amounts of money across the border.

The 60-year-old man was following the Kaliningrad-Adler railway through the Gudogai checkpoint. During an oral interview with a customs officer, he stated that he was not moving cash. However, during customs control, over 53 thousand euros and more than 6 thousand Russian rubles were found in the pocket of the jacket located on the compartment shelf of the carriage.

The criminal case was initiated under Part 2 of Article 228 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. The sanction of the article provides for a fine, restriction of liberty for up to 5 years or imprisonment for the same period.

The Belarusian customs once again warns about the need for mandatory declaration of amounts exceeding the equivalent of 10 thousand US dollars. Illegal movement of over 30 thousand US dollars is already a criminal liability.
