Brest customs officers have established the illegal movement of 20 items of cultural value across the customs border.
A married couple, traveling in their car through the Brest border crossing, attempted to import them from Poland.
The Belarusian citizens chose the green corridor to cross the border, claiming they were only transporting personal belongings—clothing and fishing gear.
Hidden among these items were 29 pieces of silver, copper, and zinc tableware and cutlery. After their discovery by a customs officer, the couple said they had been asked to transport the antiques across the border by a stranger for a fee.
A Customs Laboratory expert determined that 20 of the items sent for examination, created more than 50 years ago, are classified as cultural property. The total estimated value of the items seized pending a court ruling is approximately 10,000 rubles. The Brest Customs Office has initiated administrative proceedings against the individuals under Part 2 of Article 15.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Belarus.
The penalty under this article is a fine of up to 30 basic units, with possible confiscation of the illegally imported goods and the vehicle used to transport them.
